Darkroom printing is easy but not convenient
It’s a shame people don’t print more photographs. Handling a nice big glossy print is just way better than viewing a photo uploaded to Flickr at, what, 800px wide a computer screen. Those of us who still shoot film have 2 basic choices for getting our negatives printed. First is by scanning them into the computer and printing them on an inkjet printer. The second is using a darkroom....

I guess it’s okay for a decent prog-rock band to go for a hit single or two.
My Thoughts on the iPad
Thoughts about the iPad? I don’t have any thoughts about the iPad — at least none worth sharing. I’ve never seen one in real life, let alone used one. What value could I possibly add by pretending I know anything at all about it?
That’s right, none.

Using Stickyscreen for my browser's start page
That is what greets me every time I open a new Safari tab or window. Silly, eh? The nu-minimalists will scoff, but it’s actually stopped me from wandering off on a few occasions.
Just go to http://www.stickyscreen.org/ and type in whatever feel-good motivational message you want. Then make that your browser’s start/home page.
Tablet Schmablet, I've got a Snap 1+1!
Wow, this has been sitting in my basement, ignored, for nearly 20 years now. On a whim, I plugged it in tonight and sure enough, it booted right up - into MS-DOS 3.30.
Made in 1990, it runs on 2 floppy drives. One for DOS and one for, well, everything else. I think there’s an Intel 8088 processor inside(tm). State of the art!
I ran my entire life on this thing, thanks to...

I’ve never listened to anything by Wilco until today. It’s not bad, and the LP came with a CD in the package. You can see here why vinyl is better - it’s BIGGER!

My newest new system - Text files, Notational...
Every 6 months or so I tend to throw out whatever “systems” I’m using and start fresh. It happened again this past weekend after I stood behind someone and watched him open up TextEdit and make a note in it. TextEdit! Can you believe it? What year is this? I kept watching and he just wrote what he needed to write and saved the file to a folder on his drive with an...

How Soon Was Now?
No other kinds of photographs are quite so tactile in their appeal: there is something strangely fleshy about their surfaces. The colors tend to lack contrast, but as a result, those colors often seem to caress the surfaces they describe, to slowly, smoothly flow across them with a kind of alert tenderness. The very colors seem imbued with sensuality. via thenation.com Makes you want to...

Now Playing: Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
Watching Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey last night reminded me how much I like the older Judas Priest records. Halford’s voice on Deceiver gets as high as I’ve ever heard it.

Stack as many dishes, glasses, and mugs in the sink as you can get to fit in it. Be sure to include as much leftover food as possible, especially if it came from the ocean. There should be no more than 1 inch of clearance between the top of the stack and the faucet’s opening. Saturate the sponge, then hide it somewhere in the middle of the stack. Pour coffee over the stack. ...
Nil by mouth - Roger Ebert
So that’s what’s sad about not eating. The loss of dining, not the loss of food. It may be personal, but for, unless I’m alone, it doesn’t involve dinner if it doesn’t involve talking. The food and drink I can do without easily. The jokes, gossip, laughs, arguments and shared memories I miss. Sentences beginning with the words, “Remember that time?” I ran...
